AZ Scout Saves Friend's Life

Posted on May 16 2012 - 12:21am

Are your first aid skills up to snuff?  A group of scouts found out this week just how important it is to know your stuff: Warren McGregor, 12, found his friend at the bottom of the pool while the boys were swimming; he had suffered a seizure.
From the article: Warren said he learned when faced with an emergency, "you don't have time to look (the information) up - it's instinct. I was lucky enough to have my Dad as a scoutmaster to train me."

David said the event taught him to pay more attention to what he was learning in Scouts.

A year ago, the boys had all earned their First Aid Merit Badge, which included CPR, but only Warren had chosen to brush up on the skills to teach other Scouts. And Warren was the only boy to swim to the other end of the pool where David was found.

Merit Badge Opportunity

Posted on May 15 2012 - 11:56pm

Coin Collecting MBThe Richmond Coin Club is offering Coin Collecting Merit Badge Certification on Saturday, May 19 at 1:00 PM.   The show opens at 10:00 AM.   Scouts need to bring their merit badge blue card with them so that they can sign off on the completed requirements.     Of the 11 requirements, they will cover all but #7 which requires a little pre-work for the Scout.   If Scouts come early, at 10 AM, they might be able to complete that one as well.   The class is about 3 hours in length.  There is no charge for the show or the class.   The Club would appreciate knowing the number of scouts coming just so they can ensure there are enough handouts.  Email John Philips, Education Co-Director for the Richmond Coin Club at john.philips@comcast.netif you plan to attend the class or if you have questions.  You can also reach him at 804-347-7082.

This event is open to friends and families as well.  Saturday is Young Numismatist Day, in celebration anyone under age 18 can partake in activities like a Treasure Hunt of answers to coin collecting questions and answers, and other activities.   The Coin Club will also have a unique exhibit of Trade Items in Colonial America--very educational--about trade between the colonists and Indians as well as colonists with Great Britain.

Morse interpreter strip
From Scouting Magazine's blog:
Get ready to dot-dot your I’s and dash your T’s.
Today, the Boy Scouts of America released the Morse Code Interpreter Strip, an official patch for Scouts and Scouters who can demonstrate their ability to “speak” this special language.
Morse Code joins languages like Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Sign Language, and several others as interpreter strips available for wear on Scout uniforms (above the right pocket).
